What is “Vodohod”?
In 1804 Ivan Koulibin, a genius mechanical engineer from Nizhny Novgorod, created a “me-chanical” miracle – a vessel that was propelled up
the current by the force of the currents itself. That miracle was intended to breast the current. First it was tested on the Neva river in 1782.
Crowds of people were watching with rapt attention the vessel moving fast without oars or sails. Ivan Koulibin gave that invention the name “Water-going vessel”
or “water-goer.” In Russian the word “water” reads “voda” and “go” – “hod” or “hodÚ” as it was spelled that time, so we have the name “Vod(o)hodÚ.”
This word reminds us of two big Russian river ports – Saint-Petersburg and Nizhny Novgorod and of course the greatest Russian rivers – the Neva and the Volga rivers.
